Outdoor Education

International Students have a regular opportunity to experience the very best of our region .

Students arriving in Term 1 take part in our Orientation Camp.

Students not undertaking exams in Terms 3 & 4 take part in a full outdoor program with experiences including rock climbing, surfing, kayaking and sightseeing.

We also offer physical education outdoors as a subject choice for students in Year 11 & 12.


Year 11 Physical Education Outdoors

This is a combined Physical Education and Outdoor Education course and allows the students to take part in a range of outdoor activities.

The main activities the students take part in are Tramping, Bushcraft, Mountain Biking, Orienteering and Team Building activities.

During the year the students take part in a range of different mountain bike rides in and around the Porirua area as well as Day walks on the Paekakariki Escarpment track and in Belmont Regional Park.

They also take part in a 3 day tramping and bushcraft camp in the Rimutaka Ranges. In this camp students will build survival shelters and emergency stretchers, will complete 2 different day tramps, stay in both a tent and a hut, and cook using outdoor gas cookers.


Year 12 Physical Education Outdoors

This course offers students the chance to not only experience a range of outdoor activities but to also demonstrate leadership in the outdoors.

Students are able to design and run their own outdoor activities within the Wellington area.

During the year the course involves completing a range of mountain biking in the Porirua area, completing a Wellington city amazing race and experiencing some day tramping around Wellington.

The main trip for the course is the 3 day Rimutaka Cycle Tour. On this trip students get to complete a cycle trip around the Wairarapa and Wellington coast lines while tenting on the famous Rimutaka Incline and around the Wairarapa coast.

And last but not least take part in the Tough guy tough girl Wellington Secondary schools event

Year 13 Physical Education Outdoors

This course offers students the chance to not only experience a range of outdoor activities but to also demonstrate leadership in the outdoors.

During the year the course involves completing a range of mountain biking in the Porirua area, completing in either the Tough guy tough girl Wellington Secondary schools event or Porirua Grand Traverse.

The main trip for this course is the 3 day /2night hike completing the Jumbo Circuit in the Tararua Mountains.


Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh program requires students to complete chosen service, skill, physical activity options as well as 2 overnight tramps.

- For the bronze award Students complete 3 months of 2 of the options (skill, service and physical activity). Then they will complete 6 months on the other option (skill, service or physical activity).

All students will also have to complete a practice overnight trip and then an assessed overnight trip.
